We're delighted to have an established diocesan environmental team here in Coventry and with our focus on Renewing Our Relationship this month we're looking encourage more passionate people to our team.
Godfrey Armitage, our Diocesan Environment Officer, writes about the role and purpose of our Deanery Environmental Representatives.
I want to thank and commend our great Deanery Environmental Representatives. They have been encouraging churches in their deaneries to register for Eco Church, and to work towards awards as part of the A Rocha UK accreditation scheme. They have also been organising events and sharing information about creation care initiatives with churches and with the Diocesan Environment Group.
The process of completing the survey and gaining an Eco Church award endorses the approaches taken by many churches to renew our relationship with the environment. Caring for God’s creation and acting as responsible stewards is very much part of our collective calling and purpose as highlighted by the Church of England’s Fifth Mark of Mission.
This month, we’ve already reflected on the opportunity for mission in our communities that is part of the offering of Eco Churches and our approach to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030. You can hear more about this on the 2nd episode of our Zero Interest Podcast.
We have a few deaneries who are currently without Deanery Environmental Representatives. This is a voluntary position and your commitment to act can be entirely tailored to the time and energy you can bring to the role. We’ve drawn up a description of the role. This is easily accessible here, or by emailing Godfrey Armitage or Colin Angus.
If you have a keen interest in any aspect of conservation, biodiversity, combatting carbon emissions, sustaining natural habitats, promoting fair trade and global justice, then we think that the DER role is one you’d enjoy. We provide training and resources alongside opportunities to act.
We are also looking for people to assist current DERs to increase our capacity to respond to the ever-increasing environmental challenges facing us in God’s world.
