A Civic Service of Thanksgiving for the life of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was held at Coventry Cathedral on Friday 16 April 2021.
Following COVID-19 guidelines, guests were limited to 30, and social distancing and all other safety measures were in place. People can watch the event on the Cathedral’s Facebook page.
Guests included Deputy Lord Mayor of Coventry Cllr John McNicholas; Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins; Leader of the Coventry Conservative Group at the Council, Cllr Gary Ridley; Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands George Marsh; High Sheriff of the West Midlands, Louise Bennett; and representatives from the Emergency Services and Armed Forces.
There were also representatives of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in the city.
The sermon was preached by The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth, Bishop of Coventry.
Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Ann Lucas, said:
“Through his work, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has left an incredible legacy and has helped to improve the lives of people across the world, including many here in our own city. This service will allow our city to celebrate that and give thanks for an incredible lifetime of service and dedication.”
As part of the service, the Coventry Peace Bell was rung. The Peace Bell was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany on 14 November 1990, the 50th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz.
