A new exhibition made up of art created by broken glass has gone on display in The Chapel of Christ the Servant at Coventry Cathedral.
Coventry Cathedral and Coventry Haven Women’s Aid collaborated with artist, Roberta De Caro, on this new body of work. This exhibition is made up of pieces all created by survivors of domestic abuse, creating art from fragments of glass. ‘From the Fragment to the Whole’ explores glass as a metaphor for surviving domestic abuse.
Roberta completed a four-week residency at the cathedral, hosting workshops with local women survivors of domestic abuse. In the cathedral’s vestry, Roberta and the women smashed glass and from the fragments created striking and unique pieces of art.
The art portrays stories of survival and resilience, using a material and a process that emphasizes the participants lived experience.

One participant said:
“I’d had a picture of my heart as having a room full of broken glass which I’d kept tight shut. Now the room of broken glass is open – at first I just wanted to sweep it out as quickly as possible. Then I saw that it was to be made into a beautiful window. The broken glass is the past pain I haven’t wanted to face, acknowledge, feel.”
The exhibition is available to see in The Chapel of Christ the Servant until 26th April during regular cathedral opening hours.
‘From the Fragment to the Whole’ is a non-profit project. To support future workshops you can make a donation here.
