On Wednesday 11 June there was a special celebration to thank our incredible Parish Safeguarding Officers (PSOs). It was a wonderful occasion to reflect on and highlight the invaluable ministry they offer within their church communities. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all who enter our churches is a true testament of God’s love.
One of the greatest joys of the evening was the opportunity to come together, share stories, and appreciate the impact of safeguarding in our parishes. Director of Safeguarding, Sarah Price, also announced some updates and messages of thanks from clergy to PSOs were shared. We were also blessed to have Bishop Sophie join us, who offered words of encouragement and support.
As a token of appreciation, each PSO received a packet of sunflower seeds—a beautiful symbol of the growth they have fostered in their ministry. Just as sunflowers stretch towards the light, their work helps the church flourish, making it a safer, brighter place for all.
Alison Manning, Parish Safeguarding Officer at St Barbara’s in Coventry said: “It was lovely to be able to come together and feel recognised for the important work we do. It can often feel isolating because of the confidentiality involved, so it was great to chat with others who are doing similar work in their own churches, eat cake and receive updates and sunflower seeds.”
The PSOs were all encouraged that, although Safeguarding is a ministry that often works quietly in the background, and at times, the fruits of this work may seem difficult to see they all play a key role in helping the church grow and thrive, every act and every effort contributes to the wider mission in sharing the love and hope of Jesus. Their work is meaningful and God is at work through them.
