An Update on Bishop Ruth and Future Plans

Bishop Ruth has been here in Coventry now for almost a year supporting the life and mission of the Church in this diocese.  It has been a generous undertaking and commitment as she has been living most of the time here in Coventry with some visits to her home in Wells.

Bishop Ruth says,

”It has been an absolute joy!  I have really valued being able to get out and about amongst you, sharing in worship on Sundays and being able to see something of the amazing contributions that you each make to everyday life in your communities.”

“I have loved baptising and confirming so many diverse people of all ages and backgrounds.  Many have found faith in this past year or are discerning vocations to both lay and ordained ministry.  There have been some deeply emotional moments as they have made these very public statements of faith and much of that is down to you and the welcome demonstrated by your churches and communities.

It has been wonderful to work with such a dedicated group of clergy and lay leaders and see how God is moving across the diocese through you all.  I have learnt so much from each of you and give thanks for having a share in the gospel of Christ alongside you.  Thank you for all you have given me in support and prayer.”

Bishop Ruth will soon be returning to Bath and Wells to resume her role as Bishop of Taunton.  Bishop Christopher delegated responsibility to Bishop Ruth for a year and that year ends tomorrow.  Archbishop Justin has extended that delegation until the end of the year in order that Bishop Ruth can complete some tasks and finish her episcopal ministry here on Christmas Eve at the ‘Form of a Servant’ service.

Bishop Ruth looks forward to continuing to work in the Diocese over the next few weeks and assures you of her love and prayers for you all.  There will be a period of time between Bishop Ruth’s departure and the new Bishop, Bishop Sophie, being installed.  During this time Bishop Tim Thornton has been asked to support the diocese in its ministry and mission and will have delegated authority from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Archbishop Justin said,

“I am enormously grateful to Bishop Ruth for her generous commitment in taking up the interim role in Coventry over the last year. By her presence among you, Bishop Ruth has brought her wisdom and insight as well as her considerable gifts of building relationships, collaborative leadership, listening and enabling. I will keep the Diocese of Coventry in my prayers over this significant time of transition.”
