We asked Course Participant Debbie for her reflections on completing the BCDM
"I feel very blessed to have been able to attend them. Thank you so much for this invaluable resource readily available to Christians in our Diocese."
What role has BCDM played in getting you to where you are now in your faith?
I have been a Christian for over 30 years but I have found that the BCDM modules have encouraged and enriched my faith and given me a greater confidence in reading and understanding Scripture. In the modules there is challenge to ask questions, to look at topics in a new way, to discuss our views in a safe and positive environment. I have loved the variety of courses, the different ways of presentation: using video, discussion, power points, music, group work, teaching from the front. The courses have made Scripture come alive; have encouraged my prayer life and desire to read the Bible daily. As I go over passages we studied, they are more meaningful and deeply speak to me. The modules have challenged my values and outlook on issues affecting our society and given me a greater understanding of how God longs to reach out in relationship with his creation through each of us. Doing the small assignments (some essays, some artistic and some using power point presentations) at the end of each course has helped me consolidate, reflect upon and make a personal response to some of the themes.
Can you be specific about any particular modules or themes that have resonated with you most?
Creation and Fall - was the first module I did and it made me realise that there were gaps in my understanding and knowledge of the Bible. This I think fuelled my hunger for more.
The Book of Revelation - This exploration of quite a tricky book was so helpful in making sense of prophetic imagery and the thrill of Heaven itself. It was brilliant.
John's Gospel - This course has, I think, had the most impact, as we looked at the gospel in great detail and I felt so fed and inspired by it. It really has been helpful and deepened my belief in and relationship with God.
Going Deeper: Prayer - was very practical with weekly exercises to try and then feed back on (eg: Examen prayer). Enriching and encouraging and developing daily rhythms in my own life.
Really I could have probably named each of the courses for different reasons. i have enjoyed the styles and personalities of the different course leaders, bringing their own touches to the modules, and I feel very blessed to have been able to attend them. Thank you so much for this invaluable resource readily available to Christians in our Diocese.
