On Saturday 4th July, Diocesan Synod gathered at St George's, Rugby for a morning of hearing from voices from across the diocese and beyond.
Bishop Sophie gave her Presidential Address, in which she spoke about the diocese strengthening its reputation as peacemakers. She also reflected on the past 20 months since being announced as Bishop of Coventry and the countless conversations she has had with hundreds of groups and individuals which has helped craft a renewed vision and refreshed strategy for the diocese. Diocesan Synod agreed a form of words which speak of our dioceses' unique charism and will sit over our new vision and strategy work: "Growing the Church of England in Coventry and Warwickshire. Reconciled: to God, with each other, for the world." Work on our diocesan vision and strategy is continuing and this Autumn and everyone is invited to come to one of our consultation events which are taking place at different venues across the diocese. Synod were joined by Jennie Johnson and Bethany Prince from the West Midlands Racial Justice Initiative, who spoke powerfully about belonging and leadership in the church, and the importance of data in helping to inform accountability and monitor structural changes. The WMRJI is a collaborative commitment to racial justice working across six dioceses, including Coventry.
This Synod marked the last for the Revd April Gold who has served with dedication as Director of Education for the last six years. Synod took the opportunity to thank April and pray for April, Steve and their family as they move to Ely diocese.
Further business Synod attended to included approving the DBF annual accounts and blessing the new christian gifts, resources and book shop at St George's.
